News From the Desk: September 2018

Welcome to September! The cooler days focus our thoughts indoors a bit more, and prompt us towards organization and recommitment to work and other tasks. If you’re hoping to get your small business more organized, or need to check the estate planning box off your list, please contact us!

September 29 is the U.S. Small Business Administration’s annual BizFair! BizFair is an informative and free resource for budding entrepreneurs. I look forward to speaking at this year’s BizFair on business law issues. Please check out the blog post I wrote for them entitled “He Said vs. She Said” explaining how contractual disputes occur and why it’s critical to get legal help when drafting contacts for your small business. If you’re interested in attending the BizFair (it’s free!), sign up here.

Our team had some fun on their vacations this summer! Erin and her family took a few days camping in hot, smoky northeastern Washington with friends they vacation with every summer. They even got to dig for fossils at the Stonerose Interpretive Center in Republic, which Sherry suggested she visit. Sherry and her family enjoyed an end of summer trip to Ireland (and also remembered to drive on the left). Katie and her family spent an epic week this summer camping in Leavenworth, Washington, Hope, Idaho and Glacier National Park in Montana. They did lots of boating, hiking and relaxing, and successfully avoided bears.

On Lisa’s summer vacation, she and her family toured Scotland and London. In Scotland, they enjoyed seeing the castles, battlefields, museums, golf courses, pubs, and shops.  In London, they took in the usual sites, including the Tower of London, Churchill War Rooms and Imperial War Museum – all favorites of her 13 year-old son. Lisa’s favorite part was spending time with her family with minimal electronic devices. As for me, I did not enjoy a summer get away, but I’m very much looking forward to an upcoming vacation to Melbourne to attend the Australian Open tennis tournament in January (more to come in future newsletters)!

As always, I would love to hear your questions and comments. If you have any questions about our firm and the work we do, please contact us or visit our website.

Why Your Doctor Wants You to Have a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Decisions

Sherry writes about why having your attorney draft a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Decisions for you should be right up there with exercising regularly, eating well and getting enough sleep.

Are These Assets Mine, Yours, or Ours?

If your spouse passes away unexpectedly tomorrow, will their assets be distributed the way they would have intended? If you have not had an attorney draft Wills, powers of attorney, Health Care Directives and possibly even a pre-nuptial agreement for you and your spouse, there’s no guarantee anything will go the way you, or your spouse, would have wanted.

The Nitty-Gritty of a Business Purchase and Sale: Due Diligence, Part VII

In Part 7 of Stacey’s series on due diligence when purchasing or selling a business, she delves into why it’s critical to be transparent (and to insist on transparency) when transferring real or personal property from the selling business to the purchaser.
