News from the Desk: November 2016

We hope that you enjoyed a restful Thanksgiving! I always enjoy Thanksgiving, because it’s a holiday focused on gratitude (and turkey!)

mamasOn October 26th, Vi, Sherry and I attended the MAMA Seattle (Mother Attorneys Mentoring Association) annual banquet at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Seattle. Sherry serves on the Board of Directors for MAMA Seattle – and Vi and I were happy to support her efforts to give back to the legal community! Earlier in October, Sherry was one of many volunteers with the Washington First Responder Wills Clinic, who together prepared wills for more than 80 first responders and their spouses on a single Saturday.

tops-2016We kicked off November with another fun event! As many of you know, I proudly serve on the Board of Directors for Tennis Outreach Programs (TOPs), a non-profit organization that serves Seattle-area youth “through tennis, education, fitness and character development regardless of economic circumstance.” Our annual TOPspin auction was held on November 5. Our team came out in force to support a great cause (and enjoy a delicious raspberry chocolate cake Stacey snagged at the Dessert Dash). As you can see, we had a great time!

Our new Of Counsel Attorney, Vi, has hit the ground running. Vi’s first blog post came out this month. Please check the right-hand sidebar of this newsletter to read more from her (as well as from me and Sherry)!

On December 2, Sherry will present a CLE (Continuing Legal Education) course on legal ethics. Specifically, she will be joining Jeanne Marie Clavere, Professional Responsibility Counsel for the Washington State Bar Association, to discuss professional responsibility and client communications in relation to clients with diminished capacity. They will be presenting to the Snohomish County Bar Association. It’s always an honor to speak on legal ethics! Sherry looks forward to providing insight on the requirements of our Rules of Professional Conduct in relation to how we communicate with our clients.

As always, I would love to hear your questions and comments. If you have any questions about our law firm and the work we do, please contact me or visit our website.

Recent Updates from Our Blog

No Will? Part XII: TEDRA to the Rescue!

dyn-photo-on-flickrIn her final post in her No Will blog series, Stacey explains how entering into a valid Nonjudicial Dispute Resolution Agreement (NJDRA) pursuant to Washington’s Trusts and Estates Dispute Resolution Act (TEDRA) is accomplished. She discusses how some of the hazards of intestate succession, as described in this blog series, can potentially be worked out through TEDRA. However, this process will likely be considerably more expensive and time consuming than if you had a Will to guide your wishes.

Two Alternatives for Funding a New Business

nat-wilson-on-flickrIn part two of her series on startup funding, Sherry discusses two more traditional funding options when venture capital isn’t available: growing slowly and DIY funding. Either option can be successful if you make sure to discuss your options thoroughly with your business partners and your business attorney.

Three by 33: Part I

nanpalmero-on-flickrIn the first of two posts by our new Of Counsel attorney, Vi Duong, Vi discusses why it’s imperative for younger folks to have their estate planning in place “by 33.”
