Client Newsletter February 2014

I continue to be excited about 2014, and am convinced it will be a positive year of growth and change. To that end, I am thrilled to announce that a new attorney, Sherry Bosse Lueders, is now working with my office in an Of Counsel capacity.

sherryheadshot1Sherry will be joining Lisa Vargo as a second Of Counsel attorney. A proud native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Sherry earned her B.A. in English in 1999 from Northwestern University, winning the Edward L. Shuman Senior Award in Writing & Shuman Fiction Award. After college, Sherry moved to Seattle and worked as Production Manager for Grist.org, managing web production and writing book reviews and article summaries. Then, Sherry headed off to Portland to tackle the challenges offered by Lewis & Clark Law School. Not surprisingly, she did well – graduating in 2007 in the top 15 percent of her class and receiving the Pro Bono Honors Award in recognition of the many hours she dedicated to volunteering her legal services on behalf of public interest organizations.

After law school, Sherry served as a law clerk and bailiff to the Honorable King County Superior Court Judge Catherine Shaffer. Sherry took a short break after her clerkship to focus on caring for her new son, and then started her own law firm in Ballard focusing on estate planning work for families with young children. Now, Sherry will be participating in all aspects of our firm’s practice areas of estate planning, probate and business law.

Volunteer work is an important part of Sherry’s life. She currently serves as a volunteer attorney with the Washington State Bar Association’s (WSBA) First Responder Will Clinic, as well as the King County Bar Association’s (KCBA) Nonprofit Legal Clinic. She is a member of the WSBA Real Property Probate & Trust section’s Technology & Communications Committee. She advised clients on a wide range of legal issues as a volunteer attorney at the KCBA Neighborhood Legal Clinics for five years and served as the 2012-13 chair of the Communications Subcommittee for the KCBA Pro Bono Services Committee. The parent of an adventurous toddler, she has also been a volunteer group leader for the Program for Early Parent Support (PEPS).

In her spare time, Sherry enjoys reading and writing fiction, cross-country skiing, vegetable cookery, and exploring Seattle’s parks with her family. In addition to her new role as a parent, Sherry is also passionate about animals and has a dog, Emily, a rescue hound from the Moses Lake area, and two cats, Cascade (a calico) and Chinook (a Siamese), who started out as feral kittens in rural Spokane County.

Greetings from Sherry!

sherry-snowI’m excited to introduce myself to all the clients, colleagues and friends of the firm!! I look forward to working as an Of Counsel attorney with Stacey’s office. I will be continuing my current estate planning practice, and also representing the firm’s business and probate clients. I appreciate Stacey’s commitment to pro bono through her participation on the Executive Board of Tennis Outreach Programs (“TOPs”), and it makes me happy to join a firm where my passion to serve the community will be encouraged and appreciated.

Social Media in Your Law Practice
The Washington State Bar Association Readmission Course

Wash-State-Bar-Assoc-LogoI will again be teaching a continuing legal education course (“CLE”) as part of the Washington State Bar Association’s (WSBA) annual readmission program. This CLE is mandatory for attorneys who were once members of the Washington Bar, had their licenses lapse for a various reasons, and now seek to be readmitted to practice. I will be joining Jeanne Marie Clavere, Professional Responsibility Counsel of the WSBA, to discuss how our ethical rules, known as the Rules of Professional Conduct, govern lawyers’ participation in social media. As many of you know, I am fairly active on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. I enjoy connecting with you! Our ethical rules require that professional conduct and protection of client confidentialities also apply to an attorney’s on-line communications and behavior. I’m honored to help train lawyers and judges in need of CLE credits on these aspects of our ethical rules.

I’m excited to speak to the parents and friends of the Northwest Chinese School as part of their annual speaker series. I’ll speak on “Business Law Essentials,” focusing on the differences between the various types of business entities, key factors in developing a solid business contract, and negotiating a commercial lease that works well for your business. I spoke at last year’s speaker series as well, and always look forward to engaging with our vibrant Chinese community!

In the March newsletter we’ll return to the second installment of my Virtual Law Practice article from the American Bar Association’s GPSolo eReport.

Best,
