May has been a busy month for our firm so far, and we have many of you to thank for that! As we start focusing on the upcoming summer months, we are ready as always to assist you with your estate planning, probate and business law needs.
On May 3, the Seattle Foundation’s annual GiveBIG fundraiser gave many Seattle area non-profits the chance to stretch their donation dollars. As many of you know, I’ve enjoyed serving as a long term Board member of a non-profit organization, Tennis Outreach Programs (TOPs). Our mission is empowering youth for lifetime success through tennis, education, fitness and character development regardless of economic circumstance. I’m thankful to everyone who donated to TOPs on May 3, and I’m excited to see how those donations impact us at TOPs and the kids we support in the next year!
On May 16-19, the Seattle District office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) offered a free event for new and existing entrepreneurs called Jump Start. This four-day program provided valuable training to business owners on a variety of topics. I participated on a panel of business advisors for the May 17 discussion: “Create the Best Support System for Your Business.” As stated by the SBA, the event helped entrepreneurs “Learn how to find the right advisor in areas for which you need expert guidance, such as an insurance agent, attorney, CPA, banker, and a mentor. Join our panel of experts in an interactive discussion on where to find an advisor, what qualities to look for, and when in the start-up process you should bring them onboard.” I truly value working with entrepreneurs!
Sherry and I enjoyed attending the Seattle Estate Planning Council’s dinner on May 18, for a discussion on “The Sensitive Area of Diminished Capacity.” What’s the “line” for capacity? When can someone be said to understand their estate planning documents, and have the capacity to sign? When is capacity diminished to the extent that a guardianship should be established? Sherry and I were excited to learn more about these challenging topics.
